New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has publicly recognized that his administration lacks the legal capacity to detain Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu during his anticipated visit to the United States later this year. In a social media video, Mamdani explained that after reviewing the legal avenues related to the International Criminal Court’s (ICC) arrest warrant for Netanyahu, the city concluded it does not have the jurisdiction to act on it.
Despite this limitation, Mamdani urged the U.S. federal government to acknowledge the ICC warrant and take appropriate measures. He labeled Netanyahu a war criminal and asserted that neither the Israeli Prime Minister nor anyone else facing such serious allegations should be welcome in New York City. Netanyahu is expected to be in New York in September for the United Nations General Assembly, an event that has prompted Mamdani to revisit his campaign promise to explore legal mechanisms against the Israeli leader if he entered the city.
The ICC issued a warrant for Netanyahu’s arrest in 2024 due to alleged war crimes, a move complicated by the fact that the United States does not recognize the court’s authority and is not a member of the ICC. This stance has been reiterated by former U.S. President Donald Trump, who criticized Mamdani’s statements and assured that Netanyahu would not be arrested on U.S. soil, defending the actions of the Israeli leader.
