Owls Plunged to -6 Points After Administration Triggers 12-Point Penalty

Sheffield Wednesday has been plunged to the bottom of the Championship on -6 points after being hit with an automatic 12-point deduction. The penalty was applied by the EFL after owner Dejphon Chansiri placed the troubled club into administration. The move leaves the Owls facing almost certain relegation, sitting 15 points adrift of safety.
The decision to enter administration follows months of severe financial turmoil. Players and staff have reportedly gone unpaid in five of the last seven months, and the club faces an estimated $pounds{}$1 million tax bill owed to HMRC. Reports of an imminent winding-up petition from the tax authorities appear to have forced Chansiri’s hand.
Fans described the news as “one of the most bittersweet days” in the club’s 158-year history. The Sheffield Wednesday Supporters Trust expressed profound relief at Chansiri’s departure, blaming his “years of financial mismanagement” but lamenting the steep penalty. Less than an hour after the announcement, seats spelling “Chansiri” in the North Stand were already being removed.
The club is now in the hands of administrator Begbies Traynor. They met with manager Henrik Pedersen and club staff, assuring them they would seek a new owner as swiftly as possible. The administrators will market the club and the stadium, which is owned by a separate Chansiri company, as a single package.
Despite the bleak outlook, manager Henrik Pedersen struck a note of hope, calling it a “fresh restart” for the “fantastic club.” He admitted it was a “sad situation” but stressed his belief that the team could still fight for survival, adding, “When I close my eyes, I can see a bright future for Sheffield Wednesday.”
