Spotify is taking steps to address the rise of AI-generated music by introducing new measures to help users distinguish between real and artificial artists. Starting in September, artist profiles and track listings on the platform will feature an “AI persona” label for those identities created by artificial intelligence. This initiative is part of Spotify’s effort to preserve the visibility of genuine performers while protecting them from being overshadowed by AI-generated content.
In addition to labeling, Spotify plans to exclude AI personas from its personalized recommendation algorithms by default, ensuring that listeners are more likely to encounter music by human artists. The company will allow artists to self-identify as AI-generated, but it will also employ a combination of human reviewers and AI tools to detect any undisclosed AI personas.
This move comes amid a surge in AI-generated music, which has led to a significant influx of artificial and low-quality content on music platforms. Spotify has previously reported the removal of 75 million spam tracks over a 12-month period, illustrating the growing challenge posed by AI in the music industry.
With the increasing prevalence of generative AI in music creation, Spotify emphasizes the importance of transparency. Listeners are becoming more curious about whether the music they enjoy is created by a human artist or an AI entity. By implementing these measures, Spotify aims to enhance user experience and ensure clarity in the music discovery process.
