A horrific car explosion near the historic Red Fort monument in Delhi has claimed the lives of at least eight people and left 19 others injured. The blast occurred on Monday night just before 7 pm local time, instantly turning a busy street into a scene of chaos and tragedy. Fire services reported that the injured were immediately rushed to a government hospital for emergency treatment as rescue operations commenced.
The explosion was powerful enough to start a major fire, engulfing surrounding vehicles and property. According to Delhi’s police commissioner, Satish Golcha, the incident involved a slow-moving car that had stopped at a red light near the Red Fort metro station. An explosion suddenly happened within that vehicle, and its force was so strong that it caused significant damage to nearby cars, rickshaws, and motorcycles, leaving them blackened and burnt.
Witnesses at the scene recounted harrowing moments of panic and disbelief. One local resident, Om Prakash Gupta, described hearing a deafening explosion while at home. Upon rushing outside with his children, he was confronted with a terrifying sight of multiple vehicles on fire and body parts scattered across the area, including one he saw on the windscreen of a car.
Other witnesses echoed the terror of the event. A cab driver named Shahrukh said he heard the loud blast, immediately abandoned his car, and started running for safety along with many others on the road. Another individual reported feeling the shock waves from the blast in nearby buildings, describing the explosion as “very strong” and recounting the gruesome sight of a person’s body torn to pieces and a hand lying on the road.
India’s top officials have responded to the tragedy, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi stating he is reviewing the situation with Home Affairs Minister Amit Shah. The Prime Minister offered condolences to the families of those who lost their loved ones and wished a speedy recovery to the injured. Authorities have placed large train stations, the financial hub of Mumbai, and the neighboring state of Uttar Pradesh on high alert as the investigation gets underway.
