Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico announced on Sunday that Slovakia will not take part in any European Union initiative aimed at financing military assistance for Ukraine amid its ongoing conflict with Russia. Speaking at a press conference, Fico stated that his government “will not allow Slovakia to participate in any financial program” designed to support Ukraine’s defense efforts.
Fico also criticized the EU’s sanctions on Russia, arguing that they have caused greater harm to European economies than to Moscow. His remarks underline Slovakia’s growing skepticism toward EU policies regarding the war in Ukraine.
The statement comes shortly after EU leaders reaffirmed their commitment to support Kyiv politically, economically, and militarily but failed to reach a consensus on using frozen Russian assets to fund Ukraine’s defense. The European Council summit revealed ongoing divisions among member states over the next phase of aid.
