SoftBank Sells Nvidia Stake to Fuel Massive $30 Billion OpenAI Bet

by admin477351

SoftBank has sold its $5.8 billion stake in Nvidia, signaling a strategic shift toward artificial-intelligence ventures led by OpenAI. The Japanese tech conglomerate revealed the sale during its quarterly report, highlighting plans to reallocate capital to new AI opportunities.
The company’s profit more than doubled in the quarter, boosted by valuation gains in its OpenAI investments. This aggressive repositioning underlines founder Masayoshi Son’s confidence in the AI revolution.
SoftBank’s CFO, Yoshimitsu Goto, explained that the company needed to liquidate existing holdings to fund a planned $30 billion investment in OpenAI. He emphasized that the decision was unrelated to Nvidia’s performance, describing it instead as prudent capital management.
Following the news, Nvidia shares dipped 3.5%, pulling other tech stocks down as investors reassessed valuations in the overheated AI sector.
