Iran has underscored the significance of its relationship with India, describing it as both “long-standing” and “historic” after a recent meeting between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian. This interaction took place on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit, highlighting the enduring ties between the two nations.
During the meeting, discussions centered around several key topics, notably the Chabahar Port, a critical point of cooperation between India and Iran. Both leaders also shared their perspectives on regional developments and emphasized efforts to foster lasting peace within the region. Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Esmail Baghaei, highlighted the importance Tehran places on its relationship with New Delhi, particularly in trade and economic cooperation.
India reiterated its dedication to enhancing its relationship with Iran across various sectors, reflecting the mutual interest in strengthening these ties. Prime Minister Modi and President Pezeshkian also addressed the ongoing regional situation, focusing on diplomatic initiatives aimed at achieving peace and stability.
The meeting has not gone unnoticed by the United States, with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio commenting on the situation. Rubio acknowledged the right of countries to conduct their own foreign policies but emphasized the importance of not aiding Iran in circumventing U.S. sanctions, a point of contention in the international arena.
