President Donald Trump has provided a clear and concise clarification of the U.S. stance on Ukraine’s future security: America will serve as “backup” to a European-led initiative. This policy was outlined after a phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
The conversation with Putin followed a critical August 18 meeting at the White House with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and European partners. The meeting’s goal was to formulate a plan for Ukraine’s long-term safety.
While Trump admitted that the specifics of the security guarantees are not yet finalized, he was unambiguous about the intended roles. Europe is to provide the “significant” guarantees, while the U.S. offers support.
In addition to this immediate issue, Trump also revealed that he and Putin are discussing the “day after.” An August 15 meeting in Alaska included talks about a post-conflict future that could involve reductions in their nuclear arsenals.
