Ukraine has found a new way to leverage its battlefield knowledge on the global stage — by offering its hard-won drone defense expertise to the United States and its Middle Eastern allies. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced that several nations, including the US, have approached Kyiv for help countering Iranian-made Shahed drones that are now threatening regional stability across the Middle East.
Zelenskyy confirmed he has personally spoken with leaders from the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Bahrain, Jordan, and Kuwait about potential defense cooperation. The outreach signals how Ukraine’s experience fending off thousands of Iranian-supplied drones has made it one of the world’s foremost authorities on low-cost aerial threat neutralization.
The Ukrainian president made clear that any assistance provided abroad would not come at the expense of Ukraine’s own security. He stated that equipment and expertise would only be exported if doing so strengthens Kyiv’s diplomatic hand and does not weaken its domestic defenses against ongoing Russian aggression.
Ukrainian manufacturers have developed interceptor drones that can hunt and destroy Shaheds for as little as $1,000 per unit — a revolutionary development compared to the million-dollar aircraft other nations have scrambled in response to drone incursions. This cost-effective approach has rewritten the global air defense playbook and attracted significant international attention.
The timing of this partnership offer is notable, as Iran’s attacks on Middle Eastern countries have drawn global attention away from the war in Europe. Zelenskyy acknowledged that the evolving situation has delayed new rounds of US-brokered peace negotiations between Russia and Ukraine, but expressed hope that diplomacy would resume as soon as the regional security environment allows.
