Meta has temporarily halted its internal initiative aimed at gathering employee activity data for artificial intelligence training, following privacy concerns and pushback from its workforce. The program, named the Model Capability Initiative, tracked various forms of employee interaction with their computers, including keyboard strokes, mouse actions, and screen content.
This decision comes after the company faced significant criticism from within, with employees voicing concerns about privacy invasion, the need for consent, and trust issues. Over 1,600 employees signed a petition urging Meta to cease the collection of data related to employee computer usage, reflecting a substantial level of discomfort with the program.
According to Meta, the initiative was developed with built-in privacy measures, and there has been no indication of any unauthorized access to the information collected. Nevertheless, Meta has chosen to suspend the program while it conducts a review of the system and its data management practices.
