An important gathering in Ljubljana has brought together 18 representatives from Eastern European Member States to enhance regional collaboration on chemical safety. This two-day event, organized by the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), focuses on national legislation, capacity-building programs, and key issues concerning the Chemical Weapons Convention. The convention, with 193 States Parties, aims to eliminate chemical weapons and prevent their future use, emphasizing the importance of international cooperation in achieving these goals.

During the meeting, attendees are engaging in discussions about the practical challenges and best practices in implementing the Chemical Weapons Convention. The agenda includes presentations from participating countries, an overview of the OPCW’s activities, and dialogues on current issues such as the impact of artificial intelligence and academia’s role in ensuring chemical safety. These discussions aim to address the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction and maintain a safe and peaceful use of chemistry worldwide.

Slovenia, actively collaborating with the OPCW, is committed to the full implementation of the Chemical Weapons Convention. The Slovenian Chemicals Office is tasked with overseeing industrial activities involving strategic chemicals and working with international partners to conduct inspections. This commitment is further highlighted by Slovenia’s recent entry into the OPCW Executive Council on 12 May. Serving a two-year term, Slovenia aims to promote compliance with the convention and reinforce international security and trust.

Boštjan Peršin from the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs emphasized Slovenia’s priorities during the opening remarks of the regional meeting. He stated that supporting the development of new technologies and advocating for the peaceful and safe use of chemistry are key objectives for Slovenia’s role on the Executive Council. By hosting and co-organizing this regional meeting, Slovenia demonstrates its dedication to upholding the highest standards of chemical safety and transparency.

As Slovenia assumes its position on the OPCW Executive Council, it commits to preventing the proliferation of chemical weapons. This initiative reflects Slovenia’s broader goal of enhancing trust and security within the international community, aligning with the OPCW’s mission to ensure chemical weapons are eradicated and not used again. Through such efforts, Slovenia and the OPCW continue to advocate for responsible chemical practices and international cooperation in chemical safety.
