Kazakhstan Approves Plan for Armed Forces Modernization and New Unmanned Branch

by admin477351

Kazakhstan’s Security Council has approved a sweeping military reform plan aimed at modernizing the nation’s Armed Forces. The plan, which was endorsed during a meeting chaired by President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev on October 21, seeks to transform the military into a modern, mobile, and technologically advanced force.

The reform initiative encompasses several key areas, including the creation of a new Unmanned Forces branch and the enhancement of military management and training. President Tokayev highlighted the importance of strengthening service safety, improving command standards, efficiently utilizing public resources, and fostering better relations between the military and society.

The plan draws on international military experiences, insights from modern warfare, and recommendations from domestic experts. A notable component is the introduction of a two-stage model for compulsory military service, where recruits will first undergo six months of training at military centers, followed by six months of service in military units focusing on combat readiness and operational duties.

Additional measures aim to protect the rights of servicemen, enhance military discipline, and improve safety standards. The government also plans to expand military-patriotic education, establish more specialized military schools, and enhance initial military training programs.

Organizational changes are expected to be completed by the end of 2026, with the main conceptual reforms set for implementation by 2027. President Tokayev has tasked officials with conducting a comprehensive review of the Defence Ministry by the end of 2026 to ensure the reforms are effectively carried out.

To support the implementation of these initiatives, the government and Security Council will coordinate efforts, recognizing military security as a national priority that necessitates collaboration across various government institutions. The Armed Forces will also introduce a new information and communications strategy to support these reforms.
