Israel and Greece Strengthen Naval Cooperation with Joint Mediterranean Exercise

by admin477351

The Israeli and Greek navies have conducted a joint military exercise in the Mediterranean Sea, strengthening their defense cooperation amid heightened regional tensions. This drill, involving Israeli missile boats and various Greek naval units, was led by Israeli Navy Chief Vice Admiral Eyal Harel and his Greek counterpart, Vice Admiral Dimitrios-Eleftherios Kataras, along with Greek defense leaders.

During the exercise, the two navies practiced operational scenarios such as identifying and countering maritime threats, coordinated sailing, and conducting missile attacks against a simulated enemy vessel. The Israeli military emphasized that this exercise is a significant step toward enhancing operational coordination, joint readiness, and ensuring freedom of navigation in the Mediterranean. Vice Admiral Harel noted that the cooperation with Greece is crucial for both countries’ ability to collaborate effectively in support of regional security.

The joint drill comes just days after Libya and Türkiye ratified a controversial maritime-boundaries agreement, which both Israel and Greece oppose. This agreement has exacerbated existing regional disagreements over maritime rights and influence in the eastern Mediterranean.

In recent years, defense ties between Israel and Greece have expanded as both nations seek closer security cooperation. Conversely, relations between Israel and Türkiye have significantly deteriorated, particularly due to differing views on the war in Gaza and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s criticism of Israeli government policies.

This joint naval exercise underscores the increasing importance of maritime security and cooperation among regional powers as they navigate competing strategic interests in the Mediterranean. The collaboration between Israel and Greece is indicative of the shifting alliances and defense strategies in response to evolving geopolitical dynamics in the region.
