Yuli Edelstein Departs Likud, Launches New Political Movement Before Election

by admin477351

Yuli Edelstein, a senior political figure in Israel, has decided to part ways with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s Likud party, choosing instead to forge a “new political path” as the country gears up for its next general election. Edelstein’s departure from the party comes as he opts out of the leadership primaries scheduled for August 4, signaling his intention to embark on a fresh political initiative.

The rift between Edelstein and the current government has been widening, particularly over contentious legislation that seeks to exempt numerous ultra-Orthodox (Haredi) men from compulsory military service. As a staunch advocate for more stringent military service requirements, Edelstein has been at odds with government-supported measures that aim to protect draft evaders from facing criminal charges. His firm stance on this issue previously led to his removal from the position of chairman of the Knesset’s Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee.

Amidst these developments, there are reports that Edelstein is in discussions with former Justice Minister Ayelet Shaked along with other conservative politicians. Together, they are contemplating the formation of a new center-right political alliance that could attract voters searching for an alternative within Israel’s right-wing spectrum.

The decision by Edelstein has been met with approval by some, including former military chief Gadi Eisenkot, who praised his views on national security and military service. This move introduces additional uncertainty into the Israeli political scene as various parties strategize for the elections anticipated to occur by late October.
